Headsets

The included headset of the XDA Flame is pretty great, if you ask me. For once, an ODM actually did a goob job at finding an accessory that has the same quality as the device, but we all know that there is always more.

What kind of headsets (wired, unwired) do you guys use? Does the one you use work?

Re: Headsets

I have tried wired, bluetooth headset, bluetooth stero headset,

Wired headset which came with the device works well, but find it a bit combersom. I use it mainly for listening to mp3's on long walks now.

I hate wearing the bluetooth headset, feel like an idiot and if you dont wear it all the time then it is not ready when you want it for a call.

The bluetooth stero headset I have is a bit heavy for wearing and I find it pops occasionally. So no good for an audiophile but I find it good listenign to audio books or something like that.

Lastly I find I use the speaker phone functionallity the most when I cant hold the phone to my ear for some reason. It works great on the flame. Some of my previous pda were very echoey but I find the flame great.

Re: Headsets

which bluetooth headset are you using?

The speaker is indeed great. I have had it as far as 2 meters away (while grabbing some stuff) and the other side could still hear me clearly

Re: Headsets

Built in Phone Speaker wise, both Flame & Uni seems ok.

My Bluetooth Stereo Headset: Nokia HS-12W (I bought this)

Was using it with Uni (very nice sound quality) and now with Flame.

General Comment is that the sound quality from the wire headset provided by O2 and also using my BT Headset is not impressive as compare to my dead Uni. Music is rather seems to be below Flat Frequency Response. Instead of Media Player, I have to use TCPMP which has Equaliser to improve to the type of sound I like (which was Flat Frequency Response) on Uni with both Media Player & TCPMP

Re: Headsets

My bluetooth headset is just a generic branded thing. Nothing special, it came with the device, not even sure who makes it. No identifing brand except "Bluetooth" and and the instuctions are just 1 column of a double sided page that includes 7 languages. I guess lots of companies package and sell it.

Re: Headsets

paul's story makes me wonder if more people got a headset when they bought their Flame.

From the forum statistics, it shows that many people here are not from Down Under or any other market where the Flame is sold officially, so most of us imported it.

I didnt get anything extra, except for the nice packaging.

Re: Headsets

I almost forgot due to my silliness.

Forgotten that Flame has SRS feature and is default set to some SRS mode. That is the reason it sounds hollow or below "flat" kind of sound on the headphones. Just go to SRS to set to the kind of sound you like to listen to. big_smile.

Re: Headsets

What I saw recently: when you buy your flame at anythingonline.com.au you get a Jabra BT 125 Headset for free as a promotion.

Re: Headsets

Hi all - great forum (first post).

I was/am keen to get a new wired headset for my Flame - my assumption was that the sound quality of the one that came with the Flame would not be the best available. They also seem to drop out very easily when I'm moving around.

When in Singapore recently I had a good look around and there is a lot of good quality brands (HiFi type) around for a 3.5mm jack, but very little for the 2.5mm on the flame. I could have got an adapter, but didin't in the end. Does anyone know of good quality ear buds with a 2.5 jack ?

The only high quality one with 2.5mm jack that I can find is the sennheiser CX300,and even that doesn't seem to be available commonly, more often the 3.5mm version.

I would love to try out some of the expensive ear canal models from Shure,Ultimate ear etc,but I wonder if the sound chip in the flame is up to the job of warranting such
expensive earphones.

I really think its about time PPC makers got with the program and dumped 2.5mm jacks

Re: Headsets

Are other wired headsets compatible with the Flame or only the original bundled one is compatible? I have a pair of Sennheiser headset which I want to use with the Flame, and I tried using a 2.5 mm adaptor since it has a 3.5 mm jack, but there is no sound coming out, and the FM radio still prompts me to plug in the headset.

Re: Headsets

I have a Palm stereo headphone adaptor 2.5-3.5mm and some sennheiser CX300's work fine, also my logitech Z2300 speaker set works.
Have got some Shure SE210 IEM's coming tomorrow hopefully,so will let you know on those as well

The FM radio WILL prompt you to plug in the original headset because the original set has the aerial built in,most accessory ones don't,I was actually
surprised the device is smart enough to know your not using the originals......unfortunately,I destroyed my original earphones by catching them on
everything at work....now one side doesn't go,thus the Shure purchase......will let everybody know what they're like when I get em.

BTW,the Palm stereo headphone adaptor is right angled, but slightly more bulky than it needs to be.

Re: Headsets

thanks gerryjoson - I'll be interested to here how you get on with the Shures.

Does the impedance make a difference to the volume output ? I notice the CX300s are 16ohm vs 26ohm for the SE210s. I could find the rated impedance of the O2 set out of the box, so I can't compare. I nearly bought some Linn's a while back which were 16ohm and they were noticeably more quiet than the O2 originals.

I would have thought that the higher the impedance, the lower the relative volume (reduced efficiency of the drivers).

Re: Headsets

Wow,the Shure SE210's are the most disappointing audio experience of my life,I've just spent the last 2 days trying every combination of ear insert
in the kit, trying different angles on the phones............they sound like CRAP compared to the stock O2 flame ones! and no better than the MX300
sennheiser earbuds [which I mistakenly called CX300"s]....I'm sooooo disappointed, they have ABSOLUTELY NO BASS,treble sounds like symbols are
pathetic, the only thing that sounds good on them is a female vocal with no music.
By saying they have no bass,I mean it,I am no bass head either and usually don't EQ bass into anything on the flame with the standard earphones
as their natural sound sig is quite warm in the bass anyway as long as you have a good seal, with these shures,I had the bass in the SRS cranked to the maximum,
using as bassy a song as I have on the flame....hold the phones tight into my ears, and the sound is still lifeless and anemic,if I turn the volume up higher, they sound
very very harsh and hurt my ears........I don't like these things one bit, except for the cool cable system and over the ears design.

I wondered whether there is some sort of impedance issue with them on the flame, like Goat was talking about, their SPL rating is pretty good though and the
wolfson chip should be pretty similar to an ipod touch etc......also tried them on my notebook and they sounded equally bad.

My pick is that they are extremely overrated,or the earphones they give you with most MP3 players [which is where I gathered most opinions from before buying]are
really, really bad..................or the stock Flame ones are extremely good, which is the opinion I'm leaning towards.

So there you go people,an expensive [270.00 NZD] lesson that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence,I wonder how much I can recover ebaying them, while
I run back to the security of reordering a known quantity in the stock flame headset to replace my failing ones.

Re: Headsets

Just an update on my headset hunting nirvana for my flame.

Purchased some Ultimate ears super fi 5 EB,they have dual drivers in them,a diaphram type for bass and a balanced armature for the mids and treble.
Basically they are everything the Shure's were not for me,giving a much wider sound range, with absolutely beautiful intricate treble sound as well as
nice deep bass even at very low volume level........I don't find the bass over rides anything, like a lot of supposed audiophiles seem to think.

One concession is that these are a fair bit bulkier than the shure's,but still very usable for walking,working,riding....whatever

I did use the large eartips from the flame OEM set, which made the fit more comfortable and improved the sound quality even more.

I highly recommend these for anybody wishing for a musical upgrade over the Flame OEM set....they get 10/10 from me.

If anybody has any questions, feel free to ask.

Re: Headsets

Thanks gerryjoson - I'll look into those, they 'sound' great.

A couple of questions if you don't mind:

1) How was the volume compared to the O2 originals ?
2) Which adapter are you using to get it down to the 2.5mm jack

Re: Headsets

Hey Goat,no problem.

Sound volume is pretty similar really....maybe slightly better, hard to really tell as the UE sound becomes less muddled together at
higher volumes due to the separation of the high and low freq drivers......I find 65% volume on the flame a pretty good level generally
in my noisy engineering shop workplace, with plenty in reserve for cranking it up and don't really ever feel a need for more than 100% volume.
At home listening at 20% volume is still good because the details are still there at low volume with these things.
I usually have the SRS settings so that the midrange is quite recessed as a pronounced midrange hurts my ears at high volumes.

The adaptor I use is http://www.expansys.com.au/p.aspx?i=108470 ,you will probably find cheaper elsewhere as expansys is a bit of a ripoff on freight,I
got mine from the online Gameplanet store in NZ freight free with some games.

Hope this helps.
